You Don’t Have to Attend Every Argument.

Good morning, friends.

The Moment

Working around people in a busy galley, there is always a chance for a small disagreement. A comment, a complaint, a tone of voice—and suddenly, I feel the urge to answer.

Sometimes the reply forms before I have considered whether it will help. I want to explain myself, correct someone, or have the last word.

But I have meals to prepare and a day to carry through. Before I give that moment more of my attention, I can pause and ask: does this really need my participation?

One Useful Thought

You don’t have to attend every argument you are invited to.

Someone else’s irritation does not have to become your own. You can hear a comment without accepting the invitation to exchange sharp words.

Some things need a clear response. A boundary may need to be stated, or a problem addressed. But we can do that without turning the conversation into a contest.

Awareness helps us notice the urge to react and decide what deserves an answer.

Sometimes a calm sentence is enough. Sometimes we can let the moment pass.

One Question Worth Carrying.

"Am I responding to resolve something, or because I feel I need the last word?"

The One-Degree Turn

Today, when a comment pulls you toward an argument, pause before answering.

Ask yourself: “What needs to be addressed here?”

If there is a real issue, answer it calmly. If nothing useful needs resolving, let the exchange end and return your attention to what matters.

Fair winds,
